Reginald PLAYER375 was born in 1888. He appeared in the census circa 1911 at Chesterton in Cambridge. CAMBS.118 He was a Cycle shop assistant and cycle maker, lodging at Chesterton Cambridge. He emigrated on 25 September 1914 from London UK at to Melbourne. [NEED TO DEFINE SENTENCE:Military Service] In 1914 Reginald was a Cycle and Motor salesman in Melbourne Australia. And enlisted in 5th Infantry Battalion Australian International Force. He gave his next of kin as his widowed mother then living in Locking Road Weston Super Mare. He died during the battle for Gallipoli in 1915.
A very painful sensation has been created in Weston and the surrounding district, as will undoubtedly be the case in many parts of England in connection with the receipt of official tidings that Reginald L Player, son of the late Mr Walter and of Mrs Player formerly of Lympsham, but now postmistress of the Locking Road Post office has fallen in action. The deceased hero however represents a loss not only to a respected family and particular area, but to the nation at large, for he was one of the finest racing cyclists Britain has ever produced. After a season of steadily maintained successes on the track he developed into absolute brilliancy and defeating at one time or another the crack fliers of the day. About twelve months ago he proceeded to Australia in order to join his brother in business, and of course, also intended to pursue his carer as a racing cyclist. His big sporting heart, however, leapt at the call of his king and country and he joined the Australian Expeditionary Force as a motor driver and was attached to a motor unit. After doing duty in Egypt he proceeded with the Force to the Dardanelles where he has now fallen in action at the age of 25 years, leaving a wife and one child. Below the AIF land at Gallipoli.
