By 1895 the family were living at 150 Gloucester Rd., Bristol where they ran a business of bakers/confectioners and tea rooms. Hubert's father died on 11th November, 1911 when Hubert was 19. His mother kept the business going until 1921 when she moved to another premises in Bedminster, Bristol. During the first world war Hubert was in the R.A.S.C. He was posted to France and drove war transport vehicles. Military record gives his service dates as 1914-1920, rank of Private. Regiment no DM2/207115. Received a campaign medal, but I'm not sure which campaign it was (will cost £3.50 to access the full record). Hubert married Marie Rosa Millman on May 16th 1921. The ceremony, which was o f the Church of England, took place at St. Andrew's Parish Church, Montpelier and was witnessed by Hubert's brother, Harold who was also a baker and Marie's father George James Millman who was a cabinet maker. Hubert was a batchelor, aged 28, living at 122, Cheltenham Rd. Bristol. This was a hairdressers (it still is), so presumably he was living in rooms above, and his profession was given as baker. She was a spinster, aged 24, living at 71, Springfield Rd., Bristol, her parent's home and quite a grand house. They were married from there. They had three children and spent the whole of their married life in Bristol. At first I believe they lived at 72 Kingsdown Parade, then in Beloe Rd., Horfield which was owned by Stanley and Rosie Millman. In the early 1930s they moved to a brand new house at 43 Fremantle Rd. Cotham, owned by Cecil and Lilla Millman, and later in the 1930s moved back to Springfield Rd. (was this the home of Marie's parents, "the in-laws".?) In 1941 they moved to 30, Berkeley Rd., a big modern house owned by the Packer family who were evacuated because of the war. (the daughters Bee and Cissy Packer were friends of Marie). For the first time they were away from "the Millmans". In 1943 they bought their own home for the first time at 109 North Rd. St. Andrews. It was a four storey house and cost them 450 pounds. Their three sons Alec , Maurice and Gerald all lived there with them though all were posted away from home during the second world war. In 1947 Maurice - my Dad - married in Holland and brought his wife Corrie back to live there too. They had two children while living there and didn't move out until 1954 when Hubert and Marie moved to 12 Egerton Rd. Horfield. Alec, his wife Joyce and son Nick lived in the upper part of the house in Egerton Road, having previously lived with Joyce Lydeard's parents at 111 North Road. Gerald remained at home until 1957 when he married Pam. Hubert died on 27th November 1961 at Southmead Hospital, Bristol. I believe he was cremated at Canford cemetery. I can just remember my grandfather as a nice man who was thin, wore a trilby hat and smoked Woodbines. 1901 - age 8, living with parents Sidney and Flora Hubert Cecil, my grandfather, was born to Sidney Russel Shipley and Florence on 2nd June 1892 at Church St. Fulbourne, Chesterton, Cambs.
