Village People
Is your family history here?
Please read the notes below carefully.
I have started to add the names and admissions from records from East Brent School From circa: 1903 - 1930 to the Surname index
Kindly loaned by Jenny Binning. (Not all years are complete).
I have added the hundreds of names from the 1841 and 1891 census for East Brent Parish.
The images from the enumerators record book are not always clear. I have indicated some of the dodgy entries with a ? or [...] brackets.
There are about a dozen or so that were completely undecipherable!
The 1841 census does not show the family relationship of individuals in the same home.
So, a Mary Brown of a similar age to George Brown, could be his wife or sister!

A downloadable 'Gedcom' file of this info is available from the genealogy pages. or click HERE.
Click here for Warning notes before downloading!

With genealogy becoming popular as a hobby, I am getting some very detailed and welcome contributions from people with family connections to Rooksbridge, East Brent and Edingworth, both locally, nationally and from overseas.

I am collating all this information into a database that is being continually updated.

I try to include any information on a person as I find it.
Over 6000 individuals are now listed!
If you can add to, correct any errors or confirm information on a particular person, I will give your information priority.

  • Some entries are just a name with no other detail. This is because we cannot confirm the family relationship etc. with with similar named entries.
  • Others have the histories of several generations listed.
  • Where photo's or more detailed records and stories are available, An in depth feature or link to another website is possible. e.g. The Emery family or the Frys etc.
  • Some names could be associated with Rooksbridge or its neighbours, but remain unconfirmed as the name appeared among area records or lists of East Brent etc. Of which we are part of. And we would like to confirm or enlarge on the entry if we can!
  • There are many question marks and unconfirmed assumptions which we need to address!
  • Any confirmation or information on the entries at all, especially photographs,  will be extremely helpful for inclusion in this record of Rooksbridge folk for future reference!
Some notes to bear in mind when viewing the people index.
  • I will  publish names only of persons still living where known.  Only with the contributors permission !
  • Wives are listed under their maiden name if known, Otherwise the married name is used.
  • Entries with a ? or enclosed in [....] brackets are taken from an indistinct copy etc.
  • You are free to use this data as you wish.......... But, Nothing is written in stone! The bulk of the information here is third hand!  Use this data only as guide to your research, please check it against official records. I cannot be responsible for any errors!

Contact me  any corrections, additions, information, stories  or photo's, and I will add your details to the list.

I can now also accept genealogy files in gedcom format. (Saves a lot of typing)!

All contributions will be acknowledged

(So popular has genealogy website view section of the website become, that those who have been here before, will see that the layout of the Information has changed!
This is due to the fact that the old layout, produced a whole page for each person, and with the database now listing over 6000 individuals, it was impractical to upload and was using up nearly all the webspace allowed for the website!
All the available information on each individual is still shown eg: spouse, children, parents, notes and sources etc.
Which allows you to trace back your ancestors and/or their descendants etc.
It's just that its not so graphics heavy or pretty.)!    JR Xmas 2007.

I am now able produce and make available, a 'Rootsmagic' Read only copy of the village family  genealogy  data on a CD!

This CD is an exact replica of entries from the Rootsmagic program that I use to record our village people data. Allowing you to follow  family pedigrees, descendants, notes and sources etc.  However it cannot be edited!

The CD at this moment has over 4000 individuals and over a 1000 families listed. It is being added to all the time!

If you are interested.  Please send a padded A5 SAE and a small donation, example: a small book of stamps? proceeds will go to...  St Marys Church. East Brent.
to: John Rigarlsford.  The Bungalow, Mendip Road. Rooksbridge, Nr Axbridge. Somerset. BS26 2UL

Remember there is also a gedcom file of this information, which can be downloaded from the website. See the notes below.

An appeal...  You can help preserve an important part of your history!

We all know the situation, where an elderly relative has died and we are left to dispose of or share their treasured belongings accumulated over a lifetime. To some of us, maybe that piece of china might be Clariss Cliff? or perhaps that old chair could be a Chippendale? and we can 'Skip' the rest!
But that dusty yellowing pile of old deeds, birth. marriage and death certificates, bills and newspaper cuttings, sale catalogues etc in the attic, "Cant really be worth anything can it"?
 Don't you believe it!

For goodness sake resist the urge to 'burn' or 'Skip' it!

To a family or local historian, it could be a goldmine of information that would be lost forever.

Why not take or donate it to your local Family History Society or County Records Office for them to assess.
You do not have to include Grandma's latest bank statements. But bills and receipts etc from many years ago give a wonderful insight into the social and economic history of their time.

Who knows? You might be about to burn a valuable or rare manuscript! There is a thriving market for old manuscripts!

But Please..... If any of it has a connection with Rooksbridge. Please, Please...  let me have a look first!
I will return it.
John Rigarlsford.

Warning notes for.. Downloading the  Rooksbridge people.  Gedcom info:
Hopefully after reading this I will not be held responsible for you losing your lifetimes research and records!

To Download

Click the gedcom file link below or in the Rootsmagic names pages, to download to your computer.
A page of numbered text etc will appear in your browser.
Right click the page and click 'Save page as'
Choose a folder or the desktop where you want to save it to.
Add .ged to the index file name if necessary so that the file is called index.ged to save it as a gedcom file.

To import into your genealogy Program.

Close down any open databases or family files in your Gen. prog.  (You have got a back up haven't you)?
Never do an import with you current data open!
Create a new  family file or d'base.
Name it 'Rooksbridge' or something different to any already on your computer!
Find and 'Import' the saved index.ged file into this. (Your Gen prog should have an 'import' function?  Usually under 'file' menu).
You probably also have a 'merge' function in your Gen. prog?
But you no doubt will want to use only the info from certain families etc.
In this case it might be better to open the Rooksbridge d'base side by side with your own family d'base, and drag and drop individuals or families across!
I know this works with 'Rootsmagic' and 'Legacy' genealogy progs. Don't know about any others!
If it doesn't work with Your software. Then you're on your own! Sorry!
Here is a direct link to the
gedcom file

I am also able produce and make available, a 'Rootsmagic' Read only copy of the village family  genealogy data on a CD!   See Above:
