He dedicated his life to the education and improvement of Rural life and Agriculture worldwide


This is his story…..


Born in Rooksbridge into a long established farming family in 1920 Lance Gilling became one of the leading Agriculture and Horticulture educators in the UK and abroad.


During his career he held many important positions in the field of rural and agricultural education and lectured in Europe and Africa.

He became Principal of Yorkshire’s Askham Bryan College of Agriculture.


He once refused a place to a young 17 year old student called Alan Titchmarsh, believing him not to ready!


In his retirement he was a judge at the Great Yorkshire Show and later became its President.
