East Brent First School

Pre-school news
Story Time for all children aged between 0-4

Our East Brent School was first established in 1841 as a Church of England National School to convey the 3R's and scriptures to the poorer children in the area.

In 1976 it became a First School and now admits children of between 4 and 9 years of age. It is a Voluntary controlled school, which means the Church of England is represented on the Governing body and close links are maintained with St. Mary's Church.
There is also a pre-school group which is run mornings Mon-Fri during term time.
School Website
The school currently has a superb informative web site www.eastbrentfirstschool.co.uk
It is also linked to the Cheddar Valley Schools Website.

Press Release

Avon and Somerset Constabulary Illuminate Schools

With the safety of our youngest members of the community in mind  PC Tracey STILES and her colleagues at Burnham and Cheddar Police Station have been able to support local schools by supplying them with high visibility vests to be worn by children when they are engaged in activities outside school.

PC Stiles of the Burnham Team said, "1300 vests have been distributed to all our local schools so that whenever the children are walking near roads, they can be clearly seen.  I think this will help everyone to appreciate how dangerous our roads can be to young people and at the same time highlight the importance of road safety to all children. It has been a difficult project to manage such a large number of resources, but I believe it is well worth it"

PCSO Sara England who has helped in distributing the vests said," I think this is a really good way that our local police team can demonstrate how we work within the community to ensure as many people are as safe as possible whenever possible.  The children have told us they are always really pleased to see us and look forward to wearing the vests as soon as possible. I think this will make a real difference."

Councillor Burridge Clayton said, When the Police approached me with their ideas I was more then willing to offer contributions from the community fund as my focus has been towards the young people of our town. This shows our commitment to working in partnership to achieve projects such as this.

All the schools in the Burnham and Cheddar Areas were presented with high visibility vest by Avon and Somerset Constabulary and Cllr Peter Burridge-Clayton.

The costs of the providing of the vests have been met by contributions by County Councillor Peter Burridge Clayton and the Avon and Somerset Constabulary.

~ New school garden ~
Could you help our children to set up a their school garden?

We are hoping to plant fruit trees to make our healthy eating initiative more sustainable.
Is there a volunteer (or more than one) who could help us to plant them, subject to criminals record bureau enhanced disclosure, and someone to help us design and plant our bio-diversity wildlife garden and a 'kitchen' garden?

~Cycle proficiency training~

We are also appealing for anyone who is ROSPA trained in pre 'Right Track' cycling proficiency and awareness courses. To assist the under nine-year-olds' in off-road competency training.
Preferably someone who is CRB disclosure checked.
If not, is anyone available for training at the school and is also willing to complete the CRB disclosure?

If you can volunteer just a small amount of guidance or help, please contact

Story Time for all children aged between 0-4

Did you know?

Burnham Library hosts a "Story Time" for all children aged between 0-4 (ie. those who do not attend school) on a Thursday afternoon at 2.15 pm.

We follow the school term and re-start on Thursday 7 January in Burnham library.  It's free, you don't have to be a library member, but you might want to join the library (which is free) with your child (and they get a Bookstart card, sticker (when completed they get a Certificate).  So what are you waiting for?  Come and meet Edward Bear, sing some nursery rhymes, listen to some stories, colour some pictures, and meet other Mums, Dads, Grandparents, etc.  All are welcome.

Highbridge Library have a Rhyme Time (for babies) on Thursday morning 10.30 am every month.  We meet with Edward Bear, and sing nursery rhymes, chat about babies, and other interesting stuff!  If you'd like to come along, please do!  It's free, and if you haven't already received one, you might be eligible for a Bookstart pack (free books, free loan of a DVD, etc).  Our first meeting will be on Thursday 7 January at 10.30 am.  See you there!
