CAROLS IN THE BARN was held on 22 December 2009 a few days after the first snowflakes had fallen. It was an extremely crisp and white evening and traversing the icy yard was extremely treacherous. Little did we know at the time that it was the only the first snowfall of winter! The cold weather added to the seasonal atmosphere and the evening was extremely well attended. Many thanks to all who assisted with the preparations. The amount raised for CLIC Sargent (including donations) was £1,025.21.

Well here I am.... I made it in 4:12!

Well, I managed to get around in one piece despite the added challenge of a very hot day down in London!  I did also manage to beat Ronan Keating and Katie Price, but I don't suppose that is too much to shout about is it!

I ran the whole way and didn't 'hit the wall' which was most pleasing on my part!  It was a fantastic spectacle to be part of although not one I will be expecting to ever do again!  I really enjoyed three parts, crossing Tower Bridge at 11 miles and feeling good still, the wonderful support of the crowd, it really was overwhelming at times and of course running down the Mall to the finish, breathtaking!   Not that I had much to take by that time!

With the support of so many of you, incredibly I will expect to have raised more than £1,800 for the CLIC Sargent charity.  I expected this to be very tough, tougher than the race itself, but it has been a great privilege to reach this figure for such a great cause and for me, one that does mean a great deal to me, thank you all so much.

Cheers
Chris

Fourth Annual Granny Trek on 26th April 2009 for Children’s Hospice SW

The fourth Annual Granny Trek for Children’s Hospice South West was held at Charlton Farm on 26th April and was a resounding success.  Six hundred walkers took advantage of the fine weather to tramp through the bluebell woods and those tackling the six miles found the new route through the Tyntesfield Estate most enjoyable and far less taxing than previous years.

It is hoped that last year’s total of £38,000 will be surpassed and huge thanks are due to the Rotarians of Bristol Severnside who do so much to help with the organisation and manning of the walks and car parks.  However, even more gratitude goes to all those who took part and gave generously of their time and money.

Next year’s date for your diary:  Sunday, 25th April 2010

Red Cow Quiz Nights

Sunday Night Quizzes are Back!

Where on earth did Summer go?  It seems incredible that it is time for the start of the Sunday Night Quiz Season again, back by popular demand!

The Quiz Nights are held at the Red Cow every Sunday at 8pm.  They are open to anyone and you can come along in teams of up to 5 members.  You answer as a team (so no one is put “on the spot”).  Come with friends or family, it only costs £ 2.50 per person.  Prizes are usually awarded per round to the winning teams (£3-1st and £1-2nd), there is also a Quizmasters prize (usually a bottle of wine) awarded at the end of the quiz.

Last year was very successful, with fun and enjoyable evenings spent in a lovely venue and the company isn’t too bad either!!  The quiz nights help raise funds for the upkeep of the Parish Hall and may have raised a few IQ’s not to mention a few eyebrows!

The quiz nights are a lovely way to finish off the weekend, with a social and friendly get together over a glass or two.  This year, we have a variety of Quiz Masters, so there is bound to be something for everyone’s taste and we have reminded all of the quizmasters that the essence of the evening is enjoyment for all, with a little exercise for those little grey cells!

The very popular Sunday Night Quizzes make a welcome return to the Red Cow on October the 4th.  So this year, why not come and join us from the start!  The Quiz Nights run throughout the Winter months on every Sunday.  Details of the quizmaster for each night are shown in the Village Diary section of the BKN.                                                                                                  Bob Filmer
