Rooksbridge Crossing appeal and petition

A charity is in the process of being set up in memory of Gordon Ireland who was knocked down and killed on the A38 in Rooksbridge back in January.  The main intention of this charity is to raise funds towards, or perhaps totally for, the introduction of a pelican crossing in the heart of the village.

 WANTED – 10 CYCLISTS

On Friday July 4th we (Paul Ireland and Chris Crook from the Chantry) are delivering a petition to the Highways Department at County Hall in Taunton (hopefully you will have seen and signed it).

Sign it here

We are looking for 10 more local residents to join Paul and I, in cycling down the A38, starting from the Rooksbridge post office around 12.30pm.  I intend to have the Cheddar Gazette along to see us on our way and then also have a local paper down in Taunton for when we deliver the petition to County Hall.  This should give us some helpful publicity to this cause and most notably, will be 6 months to the day that Gordon (from the Chantry in Rooksbridge) was so tragically killed.  It is absolutely vital that we get this campaign off the ground for the safety of our residents, the children of the village and of course in respectful memory of one of our residents, who is so sadly missed by his wife Pat and her family and friends.

Please contact Chris Crook on chrcr38@aol.com or phone 07966 551074 for more information and to reserve your place in the

Rooksbridge cycle team!

Our village needs your support, please come along and support this very worthy cause and have some ‘good exercise’ in the process!

Beware!

There have been a number of break-ins and thefts recently in our patch!

Unattended commercial premises, older vehicles without alarm systems and Power Tools, seem to have been the main targets, on and near the A 38 from Rooksbridge to Weare.

One address was entered via a 1st floor window, using an old ladder that had been left lying about.

Older vehicles are targeted by these villains because they are easier to enter. Some have been found burnt out.

Unattended premises over the Bank Holidays appear to be popular  targets?

The driver of a small white van has recently been seen acting a bit suspiciously in the Chantry area. Mainly between 7 and 8 am?

Please be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to 'Crimestoppers'

Crimestoppers 0800 555 111

(And lock that ladder away)!!

Grant for Rooksbridge Gypsies.

Sedgemoor District Council is pleased to learn that its bid to the Department of Communities and Local Government for monies from the Gypsy and Traveller Site Grant has been successful. Sedgemoor District Council has been awarded £213,138 towards the refurbishment of The Paddocks at Rooksbridge.

Councillor Duncan McGinty, Leader of Sedgemoor District Council said "This award supports this Councils' decision to resolve the challenging long-term situation at Rooksbridge.  By meeting the criteria for this grant, Sedgemoor had demonstrated that it is meeting its obligations under the Housing Act 2004.

In awarding the grant, Communities Minister, Iain Wright said "It is important that councils ensure there are enough authorised sites for the Gypsy and Traveller communities. A good supply of legal sites can break the vicious cycle of evictions that is costly in terms of both local tensions and taxpayers' cash."

Background information (from August 2007)

A community solution to an 18 year-old issue of the unauthorised Gypsy site at the Paddocks, Rooksbridge has been forged between Sedgemoor District Council, residents of Rooksbridge and the gypsy families concerned.
A report that went to a full Council meeting of Sedgemoor District Council on Wednesday, August 29th 2007, explained that the Council has, for many years, been seeking to acquire and clear land  by a compulsory purchase order at The Paddocks, Rooksbridge that was at one time occupied by up to eighteen families of Gypsies and Travellers without planning permission.  The site was also untidy and an eye-sore from the motorway and for the nearby residents.
The compromise solution provides a permanent site for the two remaining families and a large area of open space is provided for the 164 residents of Rooksbridge.  The designating of this area will be included in the number of sites, dictated by national Government, for Gypsies and Travellers in Sedgemoor.
The Council agreed to allocate £600,000 of capital funding for the completion of these works, the compensation payable to previous owners and the management of the construction project.
The open space work portion of the capital sum approved is approximately a quarter of the construction costs.

Carols in the Barn
Tues 18th Dec 2007
at 7-30pm

Although we always say “Never again!”

Our annual Carol evening held close to Christmas at Ashlawn Farm Rooksbridge continues to be ever more successful

CAROLS IN THE BARN 2007

The original concept, nearly 10 years ago, was to try and show our then young children and some of their friends, the real reason for celebrating  Christmas  underneath the tinsel and turkey.  The idea was to set the scene in our of our stables along with a couple of calves and our old Welsh Mountain pony, Davy, and sing a few carols. We never dreamt in would develop into the much larger event it soon became!

We long since abandoned the idea of penning a few animals in the corner as they would probably be terrified and the RSPCA would be making enquiries!

Each year we have a few more “first timers” and this time some of my work colleagues from the Bristol area decided to join in and brought their families along, including one 91 year old.

Those of you  present must have responded to the Revd Robert Channon’s request for a “silent” donation as the bucket collection totalled £423.39.   Our helpers  on the refreshment stall were rushed off their feet all night and the profit was £462.46 making a total of £885.85, the best ever for CLIC Sargent.

We are extremely grateful to Peter and Liz Scott of Moorland Farm Shop in Axbridge who, this year,  kindly donated the sausages and burgers, as this helped increase the profit.

As usual all our helpers were invaluable and we couldn’t manage without them. Many thanks you were all brilliant.

Here’s to next year when the target has to be the magic £1,000!

Rosemary Gilling

Many thanks.

If anyone would like to take part either musically or help with preparations and the refreshments, please do let us know, all help and contributions are welcome.

There is no entrance fee but during the evening a collection will be made for CLIC Sargent.  Some of you may know that CLIC (Cancer & Leukaemia in Childhood Trust) merged with the Malcolm Sargent Fund in 2005

ROOKSBRIDGE SAFARI SUPPER

As we had to cancel the previously planned Supper in the Autumn the replacement took place in February which is earlier than usual . Although only 28 people took part it was no less enjoyable.

It was good to be able to kick off once again from our recently re-opened pub, The Wellington Arms. Many thanks to the landlords for allowing us to use the skittle alley.

We were pleased to welcome the new owners of The Old Manor as first timers and we hope they will become regulars in the future.

A total of £196 was raised and this has been passed to the charity, Help the Child, which assists local children with disabilities or special needs.

The main topic of conversation ….?   For once I am not sure but as I  shared a table with the owners of The Acres for the majority of the evening ours seemed to mainly concern insects and reptiles !!

As usual, many thanks to all of the hosts who provided fare to  their usual high standard.

The next Safari Supper will take place in the Autumn – watch this space.
