The Village Pump

For many years, possibly well into the 1900's, the village pump was the only source of clean water for many villagers.
References to the water supply in Rooksbridge were recorded in the East Brent Parish Council Minutes of 1895

The pump can be seen in the extreme left of this old photo of Clare Street now known as Gills Lane

The original village pump was re-discovered in the 1990's. And had been used as a garden ornament for several years! As a Millennium 2000 project the pump was given back to the village and was restored and re-erected in its original location at the top of Gills Lane, by Nick from the garage with help from other residents.

Chris Rickard now living in New Zealand, recalls the pump in the late 1930’s early 40’s.
The pump was possibly still in use during the 1940's and World War Two, Which might explain how it escaped War Effort 'Scrap Metal' collections!

In answer to some of the questions below, it is thought that the pump lay for many years at Manor Farm where it was discovered by John White and Bill Viles during a clear out?

In recognition of the hard work of those residents who organised this Millennium project. I would very much like to record more information about the pump on our website.

For example:

Was the water provided by mains or well?
When was it removed?
Where has it been?
And who were you folks that helped to resurrect it?

Any little snippet of information on the history of the Village pump will be most welcome.
